 A Horticulture Degree student at Myerscough College who recently set up her own gardening business has won the Student Entrepreneur of the Year competition 2007.
Sue Jeffries, aged 43, from Edgworth, near of Bolton, is a student on the Foundation Degree Professional Gardening and Plant Knowledge course at the College. She is the winner of this annual competition run by The Rural Business Centre at Myerscough, which was set up to encourage students who do planning modules at the College to submit a business plan. In addition to the title of Student Entrepreneur of the Year, the prize included a £500 cheque from the Northwest Development Agency.
Sue met all of the three key criteria that the judges were looking for, which were the likelihood of achieving the idea, market place and marketing mix and the novelty factor and unique selling points.
Sue started her own garden maintenance and development business called ‘The Nurtured Garden’ in May this year and has already started to build up regular clients and take on one-off development projects around Edgworth, Ramsbottom and Bolton. She said:
“Two years ago I was working as an office manager in Manchester so this a big career change for me but I love working with plants, developing gardens and meeting new clients. I’m also enjoying the freedom and excitement of running my own business rather than working for a big organisation. I am studying so part-time alongside running the business and I will be going into my final year of the course in September.”
Sue added; “This is the perfect combination for me as I was looking for a part-time course that combined some garden design with more practical gardening knowledge to help me develop my career. The College gardens are well kept with a diverse range of plants that really help with developing my knowledge of plant names and seeing what plants look good at different times of year.
I also enjoy meeting with other students, many of whom already work in design and horticulture and can share their experiences and knowledge. I have appreciated the depth of experience of many of my tutors who have worked in horticulture, landscaping and related areas and can pass on real practical information about working in the field.”
Andrea Gardner, judging panel member and Project Manager Business Development at the Rural Business Centre at Myerscough College said:
“The Nurtured Garden embodies exactly the sort of activity we want to champion. The business plan illustrated good evidence of a marketing mix with a sustainable outlook having already achieved its business idea. These combined with a good outline of where the business was looking to be within the marketplace has created a viable business that maintains the rural economy and landscape.”
